Try Cherries as a Snack!

Looking for a sweet and healthy fruit to snack on?

Next time youíre at the grocery store, buy some cherries! Cherries are actually cousin fruits to peaches and plums. There are a few different varieties of cherries, the most common are Bing, Queen Anne and Rainier cherries. Tart cherries are usually smaller in size and are grown for other purposes like juice additives and other processing needs.

Cherries are FULL of vitamins and minerals. They contain vitamin K, zinc, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin C just to name a few. They also contain Lutein which is a good phytonutrient that helps with eyesight and is said to reduce inflammation associated with heart disease. Studies have also shown that it helps with the reduction of uric acid levels. This is beneficial for people that suffer from Gout. Goutís an inflammation disease that causes pain and swelling in the joints.

When youíre able to buy cherries in season, go for the deeper colored firm ones. If you happen to buy them frozen, you can toss them into a homemade smoothie or salad for a tart splash of taste. Cherries make a wonderful on the go snack- they arenít messy and donít require any peeling!
